Since 1985, Abell Eyes has been dedicated to providing eye care and refractive solutions for Lexington, Campbellsville, and the Central Kentucky area with the best technology options for vision correction. Dr. Abell and his team of doctors and staff offer individualized care and permanent vision correction, which can reduce or completely eliminate dependency on glasses or contacts.

 

Both locations have state-of-the-art facilities designed to perform general optometry care. Our Lexington office hosts a newly renovated surgery center to perform LASIK and Cataract Surgeries, and our Campbellsville office hosts an Optical Shoppe to assist you in finding the right frames that best fit your lifestyle. Dr. Abell has performed over 50,000 surgeries and is well-respected as a top Kentucky surgeon. Drs. Tanner, Abell III, and Giltner also perform surgeries and have been trained and developed by Abell Eyes’ proprietary eye care process.

Dr. Tom Abell, M.D. was the first surgeon to perform LASIK eye surgery in Lexington, KY. He performed his first eye surgery in 1985 and continues to be a leader in the field. Dr. Abell has been one of only a few eye surgeons in the U.S. to be selected to be part of Alcon’s Refractive Clinical Advisory Board. Dr. Abell has offices in Lexington and Campbellsville, Kentucky, and offers the latest diagnostic and eye care treatment technologies available to ophthalmologists and their patients.

Dr. Thomas Abell, III

Thomas G. Abell, III, O.D. aka Dr. Tom, is a graduate of Western Kentucky University and the University of Pikeville College of Optometry’s inaugural class of 2020. He graduated with honors from the Beta Sigma Kappa Honors Society and the award for Ophthalmic Optics in May. He performs complete exams for eyeglasses and contact lenses, as well as Lasik and Cataract Consultations. He treats Glaucoma, Dry Eye, and many other eye conditions and diseases and performs surgical and laser procedures in the office. Dr. Tom enjoys spending time with his family outdoors, hiking, and fishing, and he loves to cook! Dr. Tom resides in Campbellsville with his lovely wife, Bridget, and their dog, Hank. He is accepting new patients.

Dr. Michael Tanner

Michael S. Tanner, M.D. is a graduate of Marshall University with a degree in biology and Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, he trained at his first-choice ophthalmology residency program at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. Dr. Tanner joined Abell Eyes in October 2020, specializing in premium cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and refractive surgery. He also offers injections for multiple retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and ischemic eye disease. Dr. Tanner has clinic days at the Lexington and Campbellsville locations. He is currently accepting new patients. Please call today to schedule an appointment.

Dr. John Giltner

Dr. John Giltner

John W. Giltner, M.D. grew up in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then completed medical school at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Giltner completed his internship in internal medicine and ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia, where he was appointed chief resident during his final year. In his free time, Dr. Giltner enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He is an enthusiastic Cleveland sports fan. He enjoys running, cooking, golfing, skiing, and traveling. He is passionate about providing personalized specialty eye care, specializing in premium cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He also offers treatment for glaucoma, dry eye, and retinal disorders, including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Dr. Tyler Fruth

Dr. Tyler Fruth

Tyler D. Fruth O.D. completed his undergraduate degree at the University of the Cumberlands with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Business Administration. He completed his optometry degree in the inaugural class of 2020 at the University of Pikeville, Kentucky College of Optometry. He performs complete exams for eyeglasses, soft and scleral contact lenses as well as LASIK and cataract consultations. Dr. Fruth heads the Dry Eye Clinic at Abell Eyes. He also treats glaucoma, many other eye conditions and performs minor office procedures. Dr. Fruth has clinic days both at the Lexington and Campbellsville locations.
